Moving site to HTTPS

As you may have read on our news page ( ... https.html) we are about to move to https. We do this for 3 reasons:

1) Secure the connection between our users and our website,
2) Users who include our "live data"-package from a https website, will get an error because we are "untrusted",
3) Google says we get a small ranking bonus if we do.

So, why didn't we move already?

We heard stories from other webmasters who claim a move to https hurt their SERP rankings. We rank pretty well for some sitemap related keywords in Google and don't want to lose that.
We have gathered all kind of metrics (SERP, traffic, pagerank) and we will move to https later this year and will report back to you with the results.

Do you have positive or negative experiences? Let us and all other webmasters know.

No news yet. We are preparing everything and will report as soon as we have more information.

The plan is to :

A) Gather usage statistics and SERP data [DONE]
B) set up an https server and run http and https alongside for a couple of days
C) redirect all traffic on to
D) redirect all traffic on to
E) Check statistics ands SERPs again every week or so.

Redirects will be done using 301 Permanent redirects.

A quick update:

I have gathered the current usage statistics and our google data (A)
I have requested two SSL certificates through (real cheap and simple interface) for and
I have installed the first cert on and all traffic on http is now redirected to https.

the cert for has not been delivered yet. I triggered a "Manual Security Audit" at RapidSSL. When it arrives I will install this certificate too.

As always: let me know if you encounter unexpected behaviour
